When is the time to install a new water heater?

When to install a new water heater?

The average home water heater lasts 8 to 12 years, and will vary based on use, local weather conditions, the quality of the water heater and the installation, and the amount of maintenance you do over time.

Before you call the plumber, make sure your problem is not one related to the gas or electric power to the unit. Check that there are no blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers or that the gas line has not been inadvertently shut off or is otherwise damaged.

If the problem still persists after you have checked the power supply situation, call a plumber. An experienced plumber will instantly be able to tell you if your water heater needs to be replaced or if it can be repaired. If water is leaking from the top of the unit, it can usually be repaired. But if water is leaking from the bottom of the unit, it will have to be replaced.

You can probably install your new water heater yourself: however, if you are switching from gas-powered to electric-powered or vice versa, it is not a good idea to do this yourself, and should be done by an experienced professional with the right knowledge and the right tools. There are also certain building code issues you will need to address, such as installing the water heater away from high-traffic home areas.

Mr. Speedy Plumbing & Rooter Inc. are certified distributors and installers of quality water heaters from major brands like Rheem and Bradford White. We carry a large inventory of gas-powered and electric-powered water heaters in our warehouse, and can usually install a brand new water heater in your home within a couple of hours. We also install the new tankless water heaters, which may cost more going in, but will save you money in the long run with lower utility bills. Tankless water heaters do not heat up a whole tankful of water every time you need water – we call it “hot water on demand” and it heats up all the water you need but no more than you need. And with a tankless water heater, you will never run out of hot water.
